"Sweet Illusion"

Born Pereira, Columbia, Adriana Arenas devises deceptively airy video installations out of the jangly romantic Vallenato music of her home Columbia. Juxtaposing these provincial sentimental songs with video and video animations in projections and monitors ranging to the most petite, her multi-channel, multi-media environments are paeans, a lost romance with her home. The lilting ambience resonates out of its homely constructions of romantic heartbreak to a universal theme of loss, utilizing the self-conscious appreciation of kitsch as a metaphor for innocence, its loss, and our attempts to retain our hold on it through life's travails.
